The Franchise is a dark and ugly house on the outskirts of the village, inhabited by two women who keep themselves to themselves. When they are accused of abducting and torturing a young girl, people begin to take notice, and local solicitor Robert Blair finds himself involved in the most extraordinary case of his life.

Should have been a two-parter!
For what it is, it's very well done. The main actors all take their roles extremely well, particularly the wonderful Margaret Tyzack, but I couldn't help wishing it had been longer. If it had been a two-parter, the writer wouldn't have had to cut so much out of the plot and would have been better able to build a bit more suspense.
If you enjoy this version, try to get hold the BBC reading of The Franchise Affair by Edward Petherbridge, which is much better at conveying the "did they do it - didn't they do it?" element of the original.
